Your UTR number arrives by post in 10 working days. Tax2u also sends you a personalised Welcome Pack covering your tax obligations, deadlines, and record-keeping guidance.

What Registering for a UTR Actually Means - and Why the Deadline Matters

When you register for a UTR number, you are officially telling HMRC that you are self-employed and responsible for your own tax. This opens your Self Assessment record - you will need to file a tax return each year.

The legal deadline: you must register by 5 October in your second year of self-employment. For example, if you started self-employment in August 2025, you must register by 5 October 2026. Registering late results in a £100 penalty from HMRC, even if you owe no tax.
Registering also:

  • Signs you up for Class 2 and Class 4 National Insurance contributions
  • Gives you access to your HMRC personal tax account online
  • Registers you under CIS if you are a construction subcontractor
  • Ensures you are taxed at the correct rate rather than the emergency 30%

Frequently asked questions

They are the same thing. When you register as self-employed with HMRC, they issue your UTR number as part of that process. You cannot have one without the other.

Register as soon as possible. HMRC will require back-filing of tax returns. Tax2u can help you calculate any tax owed and file returns for previous years — contact us to discuss your situation.

VAT registration is separate and only required once your taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 per year. Tax2u can advise you if you're approaching that threshold.

Yes. Many people are both employed (PAYE) and self-employed. You register for Self Assessment to declare the self-employed income in addition to your PAYE income.

You'll need to file a Self Assessment tax return every year. Tax2u offers a full Self Assessment service — we can prepare and file your return for you, ensuring you claim all allowable expenses.
